The RMS Mail Steamer Douro was on the final leg of what was fated to be her last voyage, only two days away from Southampton. Late in the evening of April 1, 1882, she collided with the Spanish Steamer "Yrurac Bat" and went down. The gold sovereigns, mostly dating from the reign of Queen Victoria, were recovered from the wrecksite.
